The Cougar was also called the Mountain Cat & Screamer.
Panther is too misleading; it belongs more to the spotted big cats.
Mountain Lion really doesn't describe the species too well, only in general. The Mountain Lion is not a true lion, only partially so.
I prefer the earlier name versions for this beautiful big cat.
I wish they'd drop lion and put cat for this big cat; Mountain Cat describes the species best.
