There are between 15,000 and 20,000 species of butterflies worldwide.
The largest butterfly in the world is believed to be S.E. Asia's Queen Alexandra's Birdwing female (Ornithoptera alexandrae) (up to 29 cm).
Since butterflies are cold blooded it is necessary for them to warm up their flight muscles. This is done by basking in the sun in order to absorb heat.
