Hoopoes were seen as a symbol of virtue in Persia. A hoopoe was the leader of the birds in the Persian book of poems The Conference of the Birds.

They were thought of as thieves across much of Europe and harbingers of war in Scandinavia.

This is a wonderful picture. It would, however, be helpful if you could include the species name in the picture title and or caption when posting pictures of animals, especially birds.

These look like African Hoopoes to me.
