Love your picture! We have Puma's (cougars) here in Australia too. My understanding is that they are believed to have been brought here by the American soldiers during the war, as mascots. When the the troops were withdrawn, the handlers were told to take the cats out into the bush and kill them...but their handlers released them instead. They mostly stay away from civilisation, unless food is scarce...then they may take young lambs, or a sheep. They have never attacked a human! One walked across the track in the bush when my daughter was out riding, and she said it was just so amazing as it stopped and watched them, before going on it's way...she treasures that sighting.
I have a plaster-cast of a paw print taken from wet sand at the corner of a grannyflat we were renting out in the country.
