The three Asiatic lion cubs born at London Zoo on March 13, 2024 are named Mali, Syanii, and Shanti: Mali: A Latin-derived name that refers to the endangered status of Asiatic lions Syanii: A variation of the Bengali name Savani Shanti: An Indo-Aryan language Gujarati word that means "peace" The cubs' names were chosen by schoolchildren across the UK, with the final selection made by Times Radio listeners. The cubs' parents are Arya, a seven-year-old lioness, and Bhanu, a 14-year-old lion. The cubs are an important part of the international conservation breeding program for Asiatic lions. In the wild, there are only an estimated 600–700 Asiatic lions, and they live in a single area in Gujarat, India, making them vulnerable to disease and natural disasters. The cubs will help to inspire people to protect wildlife and build a strong reserve population for the species.
