There are currently only 6 subspecies of tigers left on the planet. There were 9 just a relatively short while ago, but humans have obliterated them from existence and the remaining six are headed down the same path. Most people are familiar with Bengal and Siberian tigers. You may not have heard of the Malaysian, Sumatran, Indochinese and South China tigers. It is hard to identify the difference between them just by looking but you can make an educated guess by looking at stature, coloring and stripe pattern as well as the surrounding habitat. Once, in 1951 a white tiger cub was found in the wild in India. His mother and three siblings were killed and he was captured by the maharaja. (Humans suck) His name was Mohan. He was, of course a very striking animal and beautiful to behold, so people wanted more of him. So greedy. They attempted to breed him, but only regular looking tiger cubs were coming out of the regular orange moms. If you know anything about genetics you know a recessive gene must be passed on by BOTH parents for it to show in the appearance of the offspring. The moms had no white gene to pass on. Mohan had to be bred with his daughters to create the double recessive environment. The litters were subsequently line bred and offspring sent to zoos and animal collections around the world. There have been only two other known occurrences of white tigers born to parents not known to carry the white gene of Mohan’s line. All with in the last 50 years.
Tigers are endangered.
