Squirrels need approximately two pounds of food per week. Their diet mainly includes nuts, acorns, fruit, mushrooms, wheat and bird's eggs. They will also eat leaves, berries, seeds, corn and insects.

The owl, fox, wildcat, hawk, raccoon and opossum are among the squirrel's natural predators.

Squirrels are most active in late winter when the mating season begins.

Baby squirrels do not have teeth or hair. They are blind for the first six to eight weeks of life.

Adult squirrels normally live alone but are not unsocial when it comes to sharing their nests with visitors especially in the winter months.

Gray squirrels come in many colors, mostly shades of brown but solid black or solid white as well.

When a squirrel makes its home in a treetop it is commonly referred to as a drey and may consists of two rooms and even a nursery.

Squirrels belong to the order Rodentia which is the largest group of living mammals.
