I'm glad you asked. I guess I could have explained a little more, but my comment was getting awfully long down there... It is easier to tell with this dog because of his white facial markings. They are the classic Sheltie markings, that breeders strive for.
Collies can have a face with a blaze on it, but it's not nearly as common. When the first Lassie dog, (Pal) got popular from being in the famous movie "Lassie Come Home" collie breeders began breeding for that blazed look. In my opinion, collies and Shelties are beautiful dogs, whether they have blazes or not.:D
One more way you can tell that this is a Sheltie is that his face and muzzle are shorter than a collie's are. You can see the difference even by having a good look at my avatar picture.
Kate, I bet that you never dreamed that your lovely wallpaper would turn into a collie/Sheltie discussion! I hope you don't mind.... :)

I know you're an expert Elaine--but it sure looks like a collie to me--you can't tell what size it is--can you????

Wow, pretty! :D I think it's a Shetland Sheepdog though. When the Sheltie breed was originally being developed, collie dogs were used in their ancestry. In a photograph, it is easy to mix the two breeds up because you can't see how much smaller the Sheltie is than the collie unless they are both in the picture. Of course if you are a dyed in the wool collie fan like I am...lol
You might want to add the words "Shetland Sheepdog" and Sheltie to your tag words so that Sheltie fans can also see and enjoy this beautiful dog. :D f +1 :)
